Book Title: The Giver

This is personally one of my favorite books. It was apart of my fifth grade reading list and at the time I felt like I was being forced to read it, which made me want to NOT read it. Apart of my resented the fact that my teacher "made" me read it and therefore I purposely tried not to enjoy it but the truth was I loved reading and I loved this book. At the age of 10 I wasn't able to really understand the meaning of some of the things that were happening in the book but now that I have read it again as an adult I look at the book in a whole new way.
I decided to read this book again because I overheard a substitute discussing how she didn't want to follow the teacher's lesson for the day because they were reading and discussing The Giver. She continued on to say how she felt it was so controversial and extremely inappropriate for fifth graders. I became curious as to way she felt that way and decided I needed to reread the book. After I reread it I could understand the lady's point of view but I personally don't see an issue with children reading it. I think an adults view of the book is completely different than a fifth graders view of the book. Obviously while reading this book tonight I was reminded of why I enjoy this book much and many memories came into my mind, which reminds me of why I why I enjoy reading so much.
